EDITOR'S LETTER
Beyond the Healthy Label

We have become very attentive to what food labels tell us. Organic. Plant-based. Dairy-free. High in protein. Rich in probiotics. These descriptions can help us make thoughtful choices, but they represent only part of a much larger nutritional picture.

I find that distinction especially important as more people take an active interest in their health.

Consider a dairy-free dessert. Its ingredients may align with your dietary preferences, yet some of the emulsifiers used to create its texture are being studied for their potential effects on the gut microbiome. Fermented foods offer another interesting example. They can be valuable additions to a nourishing diet, but for someone experiencing histamine sensitivity, they may contribute to symptoms rather than relief.

Neither example means we should become fearful of food. It means we have an opportunity to become more discerning about the information guiding our choices.

The same curiosity extends beyond nutrition.

When we travel across time zones, we often think about how much sleep we have lost. Yet our circadian rhythms coordinate activity throughout the body, including digestion, metabolism, and immune function. Arriving at a destination does not mean every internal clock has arrived with us.

These are the biological details I enjoy bringing into conversations about health and longevity. They remind us that familiar recommendations sometimes deserve closer examination, and scientific evidence must be interpreted with care.

Through #CellCare, I hope to encourage that deeper understanding. Not every ingredient is harmful, and not every promising study calls for an immediate change to our routine.

There is value in knowing what the evidence supports, where questions remain, and how to use that knowledge without losing the pleasure of eating, traveling, and living well.

A healthy choice becomes more meaningful when we understand the science behind it, not simply the promise printed on its label.

Be Inspired,

THIS WEEK'S COVER STORY · CELLULAR HEALTH
What Ultra-Processed Foods:
Are Actually Doing to Your Gut Microbiome
A food can be plant-based, dairy-free, and marketed as healthy while still containing ingredients that may affect the gut microbiome. In this week’s Cover Story, Dr. Bhanote examines the growing research on ultra-processed foods, particularly emulsifiers found in everyday products such as creamers, dressings, and dairy-free desserts. These additives are being studied for their effects on gut bacteria, the protective intestinal lining, and inflammation. But the distinction between processing and nutritional quality is more nuanced than many food labels suggest. Could something added to improve a food’s texture or shelf life be changing how your gut responds to it?
